"The Crimea" is what we used to call it back in the days of the Crimean war. That's a long time ago, if you remember.
Nowadays, the West understands Crimea as a disputed region. Also, we have been making attempts to rid ourselves of colonialist language.
So basically, we are in a state of confusion, not really knowing what Crimea is or isn't – and alternating between two different names in a desperate attempt to locate some kind of fixed identity.
In other words, we are currently using both versions. Sorry.
