Edgar Allan Poe wrote a poem and called it “The Raven”. Ted Hughes wrote a cycle of poems and called it “Crow”.
Firstly, do you know well the differences between these birds? What emotions or thoughts or feelings or visions come to your mind when you’re reading each of these words? How do they differ from each other?
Secondly (about the English itself), how does the indefinite article here changes the title? We don’t have articles in Russian at all, so in Russian these poems both titled with only one word, and I wonder how the title “The Raven” will differ from the title “Raven” (or “Crow” from “The Crow”) for you.

A:
I don’t know much about birds, so my general impression is that they are both black, fairly big birds.
Ravens have a better image - they are “classier”. A beautiful woman might be described as “raven-haired” or have “hair as black as a raven’s wing”.
Crows are a bit creepy. They are known to eat crops (hence “scarecrow”) and have a more negative and/or scarier image. The collective term for crows is “a murder of crows”.
I love the poem “The Raven” and can recite many lines from memory, but have never read “Crow”.
The difference in the article is that “The Raven” refers to one specific raven, whereas I googled some of Hughes’ poems, and “Crow” seems to be represented as the name of a character (who is a crow). In many of the poems, Crow is capitalised, strengthening this idea.
