Prohibited is used in more formal (governmental for example) settings. It means “this thing is not allowed”.

“Drinking while driving is prohibited.”

Banned also means not allowed, but you don’t say “drinking while driving is banned”. Banned means to eradicate (get rid of) something.

“You are banned from entering this building.”
“They banned them from entering the country.”

A: I’m going to try to explain this as best I can. So prohibit is usually used when talking about actions like, “smoking is prohibited here,” or “I’m prohibited from going to the party.” While ban is usually used when describing things/items that are no longer allowed such as, “gun ban,” or, “a ban on alcohol.”
