You don't need the "it" after "read" so instead:

"When you appreciate a calligraphy artwork, don't try to read it, but enjoy it as you see it."

I agree with it, but to tell the truth, I always feel a bit strange because I want to read the written characters on works. What it says, why the artist chose the words and the typeface, the peripheral knowledge about them, which are what I need in addition to seeing such as the beauty, the power of them. From the above words, I feel as if they have given up gaining a sympathy.

I am not satisfied personally that many calligraphers have such a mindset toward how people see their artworks. klingt das natürlich?
