In American English, we also say stuff like "Bears look for a mate in the spring." A mate is a partner for sex. This is why I laugh whenever British people call each other "mates" instead of "friends". Heh. :D

A: "Mate" is an informal term often used when referencing your friend or maybe when talking to someone in a social saying. It's similar to "buddy". However, it's not very common in the United States. It's very common in the UK and Australia.

"Guy" is a term for a man.

Instead of saying "Who is that man over there?", most people would likely say "Who is that guy over there." It's informal, but much more common.

A: Mate is more casual/colloquial than friend. It can also be a friend you are emotionally closer with than just a regular friend.

“You alright mate?” Is a casual way of saying hello as well.

A: I live in the southern U.S. We normally say things like, Hey, how ya doing or Hey, how are you. Guys will say How ya doing, bro' or What's up? If they are already friends.

A: Your "Hey mate" sounded perfect but I could hear a tiny bit of an accent on the word "been", try elongating it a bit and doing it lower, yours sounded a bit too short like "biin".

Also, the sentence itself doesn't really sound natural. We would say "Where did you go last night?". "Where have you been?" would be asked directly after they returned rather than for where they were the day before. "Where did you go?" can be used in either situation.

A more polite version would be: Excuse me, mate.

A: So, because "can" is (or *should be*) an unstressed word in this sentence, that means that its æ vowel is reduced to a schwa ə. The consonants, however, should still be very clear.

Also, this time the "z" sound in your "is" wasn't as clear as in your first recording.

Here's what I (an American) sound like saying this (I'm skipping "g'day mate" since that's not something Americans say haha). Notice how /kæn/ (can) has been reduced to /kən/. This would also happen Australian English, I believe.
