Q:
Was ist der Unterschied zwischen preferable und preferential ?
A:
Hi Thanh
Wow, that's a very good question!
Preferable = more desirable - "Visiting Paris is more preferable than visiting Des Moines".
Preferential = getting something extra, an extra advantage or favor. "The rich always get preferential treatment." His family gets treated preferentially because his great grandfather was Viet Minh." This means they get better housing or their children go to the best schools, etc.
It's always preferable to receive preferential treatment!
Let me know if that helps. It is hard to explain.

5.can you just say what you want already?!
6.will you say what you want already?!

A:
When you say, "Just...already" it is usually said out of impatience or frustration. You would not normally use these expressions in plain speech.
So the one about the kids might not be good unless there was a specific problem regarding the situation. And out of the two I'd say .1 is preferable. But if you changed kids to another word it might make more sense.
Say I am at the store and I forgot to bring money. I call home and ask if someone can come with money and help me out. The person I am speaking to is giving me a hard time about it. I get frustrated and finally say, "Gee. Can you just bring the money already?" Like, shut up and just do what I ask, please.
3 and 4 are good. I'd say eitiher one can be used interchangeably.
5 is good. 6 might be better like "Just tell me what you want already!" instead of saying it as a question.
I hope this helps.

Q:
Which is preferable to say, seventy four yen or seven thousand and four hundred yen? klingt das natürlich?
A:
that's fine, no need to be sorry. In that case it really depends on the person some would say seventy four hundred and some would say seven thousand, four hundred. Both ways are perfectly acceptable and any person who speaks English as a 1st language would understand both ways 😀. I feel seventy four hundred is the more Americised way of saying it, but alot of people even in Australia where I am from say it that way now. So go with whichever way feels most natural for you, we will understand you either way. English is rather versatile and there is alot of ways to say the same thing, and by the sounds of it you are starting to get a pretty good grasp on that versatility 😀
Q:
This is more preferable than that.
This is preferable to that.
Both is right? Please let me know :)
This is preferable to that.
Both is right? Please let me know :)
A:
I’m afraid I have to disagree with both answers here. Only the second example is correct.
“Preferable than”, like “different than” is an error. Just as “different than” should be “different FROM”, “preferable than” should be “preferable TO”.
“Preferable” already implies comparison and preference over another subject and conveys the meaning of “more than” so there is no need to say “than”. Also, the inclusion of “more” makes it redundant.
