A: It is often used colloquially to indicate finding an idea or theory finally fits in the situation after a struggle or time of confusion. But it is always an allusion to the map scenario I described above.

Anglophones love their allusions in their colloquial phrases.

A: As a verb, used to means: Something happened repeatedly in the past, but doesn't happen now.
"I used to go to the park everyday" Means I went to the park everyday, but stopped.
Used to can also mean a situation existed in the past but does not exist now. "My grandmother said winters used to be harder here." in this sentence, my grandmother says winters were harder here, but that situation does not exist now. i.e. winters got easier.
As an adjective, it means accustomed to. "I am used to driving this car." Means I am accustomed to driving this car.
The verb is pronounced, Yoozd
And the adjective is pronounced Yoosd.

Use "used to" for actions that continued for a period of time in this past, including repeated actions.

Ex: She used to live in Mexico, but now she lives in Brazil. (I lived in Mexico for a period of time in the past)
Ex: I used to eat meat, but now I'm vegetarian. (I ate meat many times in the past, but now I follow a vegetarian diet)

"used to was" and "used to were" are incorrect

A: 'used to' and 'would' can both be used to talk about past actions.
The difference is that 'used to' can be used to talk about past STATEs while 'would' can not.

past action:
I used to talk to my friends every day.
I would talk to my friends every day.

These are both fine, and have the same meaning.

past state:
I used to be smart/strong/a teacher/in love. (these are all states of being and all correct)

i would be smart/strong/a teacher/in love. (these are incorrect as we cannot use 'would' with these states.)
