Frage über Englisch (US)
"I know that everyone was cheering for her (Serena Williams) and I'm sorry it had to end like this.”
This is part of the remark Naomi Osaka made at the US Open trophy ceremony. The Japanese media translated "I'm sorry" as an appology, but I thought she just expressed her sympathy for Sererna fans being disappointed with the result, not apologies for beating Serena. Based on the overall context, would you take the sorry as apologies?

It just means dissappointing for her fans, and in an apologenic manner.

I thought it was a little of both. She further explained that Serena was her idol growing up. So she was a little sorry to beat her. But not sorry in the way that she felt bad for winning.

Regardless of what she's apologizing for, it should still, rightly so, be considered an apology. This is just a guess, but your misunderstanding may come from the fact that, based on what I know of the Japanese language, ごめんなさい and すみません are generally used in different contexts, but the English "sorry" is used in both situations where ごめんなさい and すみません would be used.
If I'm wrong in my assumption, that's my mistake. But either way, at least to English natives, I think we would still generally consider what Naomi said an apology.

I agree with you, @ggrks_dqn , that she was merely expressing sympathy to the Serena fans as it was supposed to be an epic, historical, match for them. Turns out, it still was, but for Naomi. But, she's certainly not apologizing for winning. Natives say "Sorry/I'm sorry" for any variety of reasons, only some of which are actual apologies. An actual apology takes responsibility for a wrong/slight/harm done and has remorse/regret. She's not sorry that she won or that she beat Serena. (Does anyone really think that?) She's expressing sympathy/condolences to the rabid, disappointed Serena fans (of which she's one) whose boos were inundating the stadium. It was an "I'm sorry" used in the same way one says "I'm sorry" to a grieving family or to a little kid who lost his dog. It's sympathy, not regret. She may have "apologized " to the crowd, but it's not an apology in the true sense of the word. One would never call an "I'm sorry" to the grieving family or to the sad kid an "apology". Right? (Well, actually it might be if you killed their mother or jacked the kid's dog.) um... Right?
