"poster children" in this context would mean "a perfect example of..." So I can say, "an iPhone is the poster child of modern technology" because when you think of modern technology, most people think first about iPhones.

@fk9 I don't know much about the history of the phrase but a quick search online indicated the idiom came into common use during the 1950s. It derived from the children who's photos organizations would use to warn or educate citizens about certain illnesses or ailments, most likely to encourage vaccinations. So they were literally "poster children" who were the models, thus perfect examples, of a disability.
