Frage über Englisch (US)
Suppose that there is a device that can be customized by a user, and the user add a unit to this device but think to himself 'I don't know the difference (in terms of function) between the machine with the unit and the machine without the unit'.
To shorten this phrase, is 'I don't know the difference between the machine*s* with *and* without the unit' grammatically appropriate?

"I don't know the difference between the machine with and without the unit" is correct and it means "I don't know what difference putting the unit on this machine makes." If you had "machine" in the plural, it wouldn't make sense.
