Frage über Englisch (US)
''I turned on the shower, but the water was sizzling, so I immediately changed the temperature.''
I was told that ''sizzling'' in this phrase sounds odd, why? I know that I could use hot, but as I'm learning new words I used ''sizziling''.

The most common use of the word “sizzling” is to describe frying bacon in a pan. Sizzle refers to the SOUND as well as the heat. People also talk about sizzling hot weather, so it seems that sizzling water should be acceptable. But it’s not used that way among English speakers. Hot water is called “boiling hot” or “steaming hot”. Sizzling means there is a hot metal surface like a frying pan.

Sizzling is a strange word. It comes from cooking, the sound of cooking in a frying pan. It is sometimes used alternatively to mean the heat outside (weather), or the heat of the pavement or the heat of your car in the sun.
For water, you would usually use the words scalding (hot enough to burn you) when water scalds you it has burned you. Or boiling, which formally means water that is boiling (above 100c) but can be used to mean just “really hot” water.
