@2up Yes, unfortunately there is no real reason or system to these. You get on a bus even though you are in a bus. The same is true with ships and trains. In the case of a ship. It is technically the ground. So you are on a ship in the same way that your feet are on the ground. Buses and trains are more arbitrary. Time can be equally confusing. Example. "In an hour." "At 2:30." "On January fifth."

A car or truck you are enclosed by it. You are "in" a car or truck. You get on a motorcycle, bicycle, horse and so on. Just like your feet are "on" the ground. You are "on" a bicycle and so on.

@COASTBC Thanks for the swift answer.
@lovegrowing Thanks for the answer from various viewpoints.
@short-n-sweet Thanks for the answer with the artistic illustration.
Each answer helps a lot. By the way, I asked this question because I saw "get on" being used for the bus. Do people on the bus feel like they are on the ground, not enclosed?

@2up getting on...these forms of transportation( bus, trains, ships) comes from the fact that they give you the idea of having to climb on them in order to get in.
getting in the bus
" " in the train
or in a ship
is correct but not used as often

@short-n-sweet Thanks for the additional explanation. That's interesting. Now that you mention it, it's true that you bend down to get in the car and climb up to get on the bus or the ship. And when you get on the train from the platform, it's flat, so you don't have to climb up to get into them, but in the old days, you might have climbed up to get in.
