I'm still learning Japanese. The biggest problem is not being able to easily read the language. For English it should be easier.
I use many sites, like ”wasabi”, "Tae Kim's grammar guide", "nihongo-pro" and "jisho.org" etc.
I did use some textbooks but most of the textbooks are written for tests and aren't good for natural language.
I watch some anime with my daughter; Anpanman and Doraemon. And sometimes I watch Gundam by myself. But I'm not really into anime or manga. I also watch some TV (like variety) with my wife, but I find they say the same thing too much or it is too difficult to catch quickly.
Also I'm not interested in Japanese dramas.
I have the subtitles turned on when I watch something on Netflix so that helps my reading a little.
I would suggest one of the best ways is to get books for young people. The sentences are kept simple and often there are pictures to help give context and more words than a comic book.
Music is good for listening and pronunciation but the words they use aren't always a good match to natural speaking.
