- Does "more car for more money" refer to "The more sales, the more money they make"? Or rather, "The more manufacturing, the more money they make"?

I would think the more features come with the car the more it will cost the consumer.

'Car' is in singular form because it actually is talking about one car in this case. It's a common expression, meaning there is value for more money.
Example, a famous cake being sold for $30 has now included a second flavor and added extra toppings. It now sells for $35 because of this. The 'new' cake is more valuable than before, and also costs more, so it is in fact 'more cake for more money'.
So for the car example, whatever strategy GM took to lead in sales in front of Ford, made the competition in car sales change to sell cars of higher quality or value, for more money.
