@purple_Katniss right so I looked into it further, and I was a little wrong, “contemporary” only means “to happen simultaneously” (so, contemporary art is after the modern art movement to present, and contemporary problems are the problems of today). I think the important part about the word is it kind of invokes a sense of purpose, so yes, it applies more to people than animals. It can apply to animals, but it’s more often used with people.
Mozart and his musician friends were contemporaries. Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex might have also been contemporaries. It sounds a little goofy, but it’s not totally incorrect

Age is how long something has existed, in years usually. My age is 20, my father’s age is 60 something, the age of the earth is like 4.543 billion years old. Same age would be me and another 20 year old, or two cars who are both 10 years old.
A period is a stretch of time. So, in school we use this for when a class is happening. First period would be (for me) around 8:30am to like, 10:15 am. A period can also be really big, in terms of the earth. The Mesozoic Era had two periods, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous period. “Same period” doesn’t really get said often. We would probably just say “at the same time”
Time is just, time. Like 7:43 am. 10:21 pm, etc. if you want mean a bigger stretch of time (like a period) you have to clarify somehow.
A: sorry, we talked at the same time. You go first.
OR
B: my buddy and I had /class/ (clarifying a period) at the same time.
B: Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops (clarifying a period) lived at the same time, in the Cretaceous period (clarifying a geologic period, not just a lifetime of an animal)
Contemporary means two things. One means modern or current (contemporary art, contemporary problems), and one means “simultaneously” (“Mozart and his contemporaries” means Mozart and people who lived during Mozart’s lifetime, probably also musicians)
