I understand what you're trying to say, but I would say,
"あの教室には誰がいますか。"
"あの教室には田中さんがいます。"

The latter part sounds perfect.

How I said it is how this course taught it to me, but I suppose beginner courses first teach what’s easier before teaching what’s more complex but more natural
