Even though the words are synonyms, the “motor” in “motorist” and “motorcycle” automatically click even if motorist is not specific to motorcycles, so when speaking about someone operating a vehicle, I’d say to use motorist for people riding a motorcycle and driver for everything, really (all automobiles including motorcycles).

Out of the two, “driver” is used WAY more often.
