Frage über Englisch (US)
hey i have a question for all native english speakers: if you see someone online, making a mistake while writing in english (me for example:D) how do you feel? do you want to correct that person, do you laugh about that mistake, or do you care in general? what do you think how other english native speaker would think? it's really important for me since i dont feel confident enough to write in english sometimes. (not here because we all are here to learn but on instagram or twitter etc)

@Lisaaaa82 It seems you already got some awesome answers and I’m about a week late but I’ll just give my thoughts.
My view on it is, you can only ever learn if you try, and the world does have some jerks in it, but also a lot of great people. Don’t let the jerks determine what you do, ever. Life’s too short! If you wanna post in English, do it! You may not get the same feedback as on this site, because posting on Instagram isn’t really asking for critique like this app, but if it makes you happy go for it! Don’t avoid getting made fun of, because there will always be that one guy or girl... avoid being afraid of living your life because of people like that.

Dude your English is fantastic, you don't have anything to worry about. If I notice a mistake I usually think "oh this guy probably isn't a native speaker. cool" and that's about it. There are more speakers of English as a second language than there are speakers of English as a primary languages so it happens all the time. Don't be afraid to speak to people.

Hello, I sometimes chuckle or laugh but not out of mockery. Sometimes misspelled words are funny and plenty of native English speakers make mistakes all the time as well. I will correct a person if it's something necessary because I would feel bad if they continued to make that mistake and I didn't do anything about it. But plenty of people I know online do not mind people who make English mistakes.

I normally assume people making certain mistakes online are not native speakers, and it doesn't bother me. I only get frustrated if I am having trouble communicating with someone about something important, or if it is a long conversation and the errors are to the point of the writing being impossible to understand. Sometimes I find errors amusing or cute. I have a professor who refers to sled dogs as "slide dogs", and it makes me giggle and picture happy dogs in a playground using slides. I don't correct people on the internet because I don't want them to feel like I am being mean. I think some English speakers can be mean about it, and they believe the errors are due to the person being stupid. Please try to not let it get to you. Some people are just mean to everyone online. I think what you have written here looks great for just writing online. I can't imagine anyone calling you out for your English if it looks like this.

As long as I can understand it, I don't laugh or think less of the person. I am impressed how hard the people on HiNative are trying to learn English. I admire all of for your effort. I'm embarrassed about how few Americans are interested in learning a foreign language. So you have nothing to feel ashamed or embarrassed about if you make a few mistakes. Keep up the good work!!!!
