Voluntarily = you choose to do something, you have the choice not to do it
On purpose = intentionally, you mean to do something and you do it
::EXAMPLES::
Mom: Did you hit your brother on purpose?
Child: No! I didn’t mean to hit him!
Mom: Really? It was an accident?
Child: Yes!
Mom: What about breaking his toy? Did you accidentally break his toy too?
Child: Oh, no. That wasn’t an accident. I broke it on purpose. I wanted to make him mad.
—
Emily: Did you leave the oven on on purpose, or did you forget to turn it off?
Will: No, I left it on on purpose. I’m heating it up to cook chicken.
—
(Parents are talking about their kid’s soccer game.)
Will: What time is the soccer game today?
Emily: It’s at 3 o’clock. I’m bringing cookies for the team.
Will: Are you doing that voluntarily or did someone ask you to do it?
Emily: I volunteered. It was my idea to bring them.
—
(Friends are planning a party.)
Sarah: Whose house should we have the party at?
Joe: I think we should have it at your house.
Sarah: No, I’m not volunteering for that. Last time we had a party at my house, no one helped clean up afterwards.
George: We can have it at my house.
Sarah: Are you sure?
George: Yeah, I’m sure.
Sarah: There might be a mess left after the party.
George: It’s fine. I’m voluntarily accepting the risk.
