@bsloan7 can u please help me with something else please.. if so what's the difference between (give up & surrender)
- Englisch (US)
@HDGD They’re very similar, but “give up” is closer in meaning to “quit”; whereas, “surrender” means to give up AND submit to an opponent or enemy. I think these words/phrases can also be confusing because there’s another phrase that’s very similar. It’s “give oneself up”, and it means the same thing as “surrender”.

@bsloan7 so can I say.
*don't give up unless death is in your way.
*if you want to surrender show the white flag.

*if you want to surrender show the white flag.

@HDGD “Don’t give up unless you’re about to die/unless death is upon you.” “Death is in your way” sounds unnatural.
The second sentence is fine. You can also say “raise the white flag” or “wave the white flag”.

Idk it just sounds a little strange. A native speaker wouldn’t say it in regular conversation. I guess it could be considered somewhat poetic, but that would only be if someone is referring to “death” as an entity or physical being in an actual poem or story. And in that case, it would be capitalized like this -> Death.
Also no, “raise” is correct:

@bsloan7 and oh ok hey can u please show me an example sentence with rise and raise I always confuse those two
- Englisch (US)
@HDGD That’s why I specified in regular conversation 😂 Although I don’t think I’ve read a Shakespeare play where he’s said that either lol. But anyway, here are some sentences with raise and rise. As a side note, both can be verbs and nouns. So I’ll do a few sentences for each.
The sun rises in the east. (verb)
Raise your hand if you know the answer. (verb)
Don’t pay any attention to her. She’s just trying to get a rise out of you. (noun)
My boss gave me a raise today! (noun)
The cost of living rises every year. (verb)
I’m so upset that they raised the prices at the grocery store. (verb)
His grandparents raised him after his father died. (verb)

@bsloan7 idk raise and rise looks pretty similar to me how would u understand the difference in ur opinion??
- Englisch (US)
As verbs, “raise” always comes before a direct object, whereas “rise” does not. In my sentences that use “raise” as a verb, here are the direct objects:
hand
prices
him
As nouns, “raise” and “rise just have completely different definitions. A “raise” (noun) is an increase in pay for your job. A “rise” (noun) is an angry or annoyed reaction. A “rise” (noun) can also be an increase in amount, number, degree, or status for almost anything, not just job salary/wages. That’s where the two words can be a little confusing unfortunately. But you kind of just have to keep paying attention to how each one is used to really understand the difference. For example:
My boss gave everyone big raises today; however, the CEO is upset about the sudden rise in payroll expenses.
Commissioner Gordon did not know what to do about the rise in crime in Gotham.
The celebrity decided to write a book about her rise to fame.
Apple experienced a sharp rise in stock prices.
