Example:
- Every time I almost get up the nerve to go and speak to her, I chicken out.
- You're not going to chicken out, are you?
- My friends dared me to jump into the pond, but I chickened out and went home.
- Adam chickened out of the plan at the last minute.
"Chicken out" is used to describe when someone refuses/ gives up to do something due to fear. We tend to use this idiom among friends (when fooling around, daring each other, etc.), but apart from that we rarely use it during daily conversations.

@Minouette@Taeha_Elliott I appreciate you all! I wanna read your examples again and I'll make sentences like yours

@Taeha_Elliott i have a question, you use "of" before ask-ing and you also use "for"before be-ing. what is the difference? the both words have -ing
- Englisch (US)
@annewithande
Chicken out is actually used as the first verb here in the pair of verbs being used.
"If you chicken out of asking Emily out.. "
"of" is being used as a preposition--it shows there is a relationship between chickening out and asking emily on a date.
"for being" is the same.
"for" is a preposition that shows a reason or purpose between "your sister will laugh at you" and "being afraid of her friend"
"for" shows why your sister will laugh...you're afraid of her friend.đ
It's not about the "-ing" but I see why it would look that way! It is all about prepositions. đ

@Taeha_Elliott đ you explained very well thank you soo much.. so.. i wanna link some verbs like yours.. How do I decide which prepositions to use?

Sorry I didn't see your question sooner!
To choose for or of...
The general rule for OF:
Of is used for 3 things.
1) to show ownership
"The paintings of Picasso are unusual!"
2) distance from something
"France is many kilometers west of Austria."
3) derived or resulting from something, or related to something.
"We need two cups of milk for the recipe."
Usually, of will have a NOUN or pronoun after it.
FOR is used to show a purpose.
We could substitute white fish for crab meat. (The purpose of the fish is to replace the crab meat).
She is speaking for him. (The reason sheâs talking is because he canât or won't.)
We protest for climate change. (The purpose of the protest is to promote climate change awareness.)
That vigil was for the people who died in the fire. (The recipients of the vigil were the people who died.)
Did you look in the drawer for your glasses? (The reason why you would look in the drawer is to find the glasses.)
He saved a seat for his best friend. (The person who gets the seat is his best friend.)
******why you cannot use "for" after chicken out:
In the sentence, that use of "of" isn't actually the preposition "of" (it is not followed by a noun! đ) Even I had to look this one up again to be sure! In this particular case it is used in the definition of the phrase "out of". Out of means "all gone" or "none left".
So :
When used together, chicken out + of = to lose (or be all out of) bravery is what "chicken out" means.
