Frage über Englisch (US)
why "From" and not "In" or "on"?
why "From" and not "In" or "on"?
You can see from Figure 3-3 that wages for production workers,
when adjusted for inflation, increased from 1947 until the
early 1970s, declined during the 1970s, and basically stayed in
the same range until the late 1990s, when a small surge began.

@Ealdorwolf pero, actually, the information is not IN / INSIDE the sheet of paper ... because there is no INSIDE or OUTSIDE of a piece of a paper. However, the information would be IN / INSIDE a book.
Basically, if there is an opening for something, use IN. If it's a flat surface, use ON.
So, the only way you could say "the information is inside this sheet of paper." is if the paper was folded & you have to actually open it to get the information.

En este caso, se podría usar "from" o "in" ... pero, "on" -- no. Es como decir:
Se puede ver de (from) la figura que ...
O
Se puede ver en (in) la figura que ...

@SpanishLena why "on" not? this is a two dimensional graph or it's because you are referring to the information "in" the graph?

@Ealdorwolf es "why not "on"?" ... pero, exactamente -- porque se está hablando acerca de la información IN / INSIDE / WITHIN the graph. Es que sonaría un poco raro decir "You can see ON Figure 3-3" ... pero, you could use "on" but, personally, I wouldn't.
I would say:
As you can see in figure 3-3...

@Ealdorwolf pero, por ejemplo, se podría decir:
You can see ON page 9 that ...
En este caso, sonaría raro decir "You could see IN page 9 that..."
Because, the information would be ON a page & not IN a page.
Me explico?
Es como "in" = "inside / within" y "on" es como "sobre"

@SpanishLena Yes, this is the most annoying thing about prepositions because we mostly use "en" and it means the same thing as "in, at and on" I've been learning english for over 7 years and they still cause me a lot of trouble. I know I should use "on a page" but when I think about it I still can't find it logic because the information is still "in (inside) the paper sheet" therefore it's in and when I think about "on" is for something that can be placed and removed from a place. e.g The computer is on the table. I know it probably doesn't make any sense in English and the most difficult part of learning prepositions is that you need to use it because that how it is and makes me ask but why? I need to find an extent grammar book about prepositions and their association with other words or just give up and memorize when to use one over the other.

@Ealdorwolf does that make sense?
If you have to open something, use IN / INSIDE / WITHIN.
If it doesn't have an opening / closing, use ON.
For example:
Mary is inside/in the car.
The information is on the graph.
Read the words within the book.

@Ealdorwolf y, también, básicamente
On = on top of something (on is short for "on top of")
Se usaría "on" decir "algo" es on top of something.
Por ejemplo:
The book is on (on top of) the table.
In = inside of something (in is short for within / inside)
The book is in (inside) the house.
Espero que ahora lo entiendas...
