"For example, as a last resort, we got a loan from Graham's older brother, and he 'would' only give us money if Graham embarrassed himself by dyeing his hair a weird color--"
What's the exact meaning of this 'would' in the line above??
1. he would give us money whenever Graham dyed his hair. (past repetitive action)
2. he considered to give us money if Graham dyed his hair. (the past meaning of 'will')
I can't think of any other meanings that I know of. If those two interpretations both incorrect, could you give me the right interpretation of that 'would'??

@hhoc2000 Your second option is closest - he will 'if ' Graham dyed his hair, so its partly future as well. He would, if the condition is met, so its the same as will.
I don't see any repetitive action though so option one, 'would need more information to include the " whenever" repetition.

Thanks
Sorry I made you confused.
For you information, Graham and I('us' in that line) ended up getting the loan and opened their store with that money. Now they're flashing back to the hard days including asking him for the loan.
Could you check them out again with the background??

@hhoc2000 Would is still in the context of he agreed on the condition that the hair was dyed. even though it is past tense, the memory is that the action( the loan) was going to happen if the hair was dyed.
it is still just the 1 action, based on if the hair was dyed.
Again, #2 is correct.
