Frage über Spanisch (Mexiko)
¿Qué significa el verbo “dejar”?
He oído que se podría traducirlo como “to stop” pero también como “to leave”, “to allow”. Me confunde porque en inglés “allow” y “stop” son contrarios.
Además puede decirme algunos ejemplos del uso de este verbo, gracias

Sí, es verdad que tiene varios usos diferentes.
Stop:
Deja de hacer eso (Stop doing that)
Allow:
¿Me dejas ir a la fiesta, ma? (Will you allow me to go to the party, mum?)
Leave:
-Ella dejó su país en busca de un mejor futuro. (She left her country looking for a better future)
Quit one's work:
Tuve que dejar mi trabajo la semana pasada porque el jefe se enojó conmigo. (I had to quit my job last week because my boss got mad at me)
Keep in mind that there're only so many contexts where it works as "to leave". The only 2 that come to my mind are leaving a country and leaving an online room. You'd see a message like "X usuario dejó la sala" (X user left the room)
Also a little tip, with the meaning of "to stop" you have to put "de" in front of it. "Deja hacer eso" would be wrong.

@Jackson_Bain 👋🏻 oh well "dejar" is a word that depending on the context could mean various things. So I'll leave some examples below hoping they can help you understand better it's use
-To stop:
DEJA de hacer eso
(stop doing that) here you are asking the listener to not do a certain action anymore
-To leave:
DEJÉ la oficina hace una hora
(I left the office since an hour ago) here you are indicating that you are not currently in that place anymore
DEJA el cine ahora mismo
(Leave the cinema right now)
-To allow:
DEJA que los niños jueguen en el jardín
(Let/allow the children to play in the garden) here you are asking the listener to stop not allowing/letting someone do something
DEJÉ que mis hijos fueran solos a la playa
(I allowed my children to go alone to the beach) You are saying that you did not stoped them, that you permitted them to go alone when using "Dejé "
So in order to understand this better I would say that it's like those English words that depending on the context too, have a lot of meanings (i couldn't think of one right now haha)

@Jackson_Bain Not only in the imperative form, actually this is probably the most common usage of the verb and you can conjugate it however you want
No puedo dejar de pensar en ti
La profesora me pidió que deje de hablar en clase
Etc
"Let me know" would be "házmelo saber" (or "hágame saber" formally), this is kind of an idiom in English so we don't translate the "let" literally

@Jackson_Bain I remembered another meaning, to quit an addiction for ex. "dejar de fumar" = to quit smoking

@Jackson_Bain most of the time but not always. For example
• Dejé de hacer tarea para cenar
(I stopped doing homework to have dinner)
•I stopped answering her calls
(Dejé de responder sus llamadas)
here you used it as stop but it's not imperative form. But I think whenever your are thinking about the word "stop" then you can at least give it a try translating it as "dejar" and look how it sounds, if it does makes sense and the context and meanings match, then there shouldn't be a problem
