What's the difference between using "that" or "this" in this case? It seems both work, but I can't tell the difference.

- Besides, the campus is big. This prohibition will make it harder to get around. Although there are buses, they only run once an hour, so students will have to sit around and wait for the next one all the time, but they are too busy to waste time doing【that/this】.

I think "that" would work best here.
"This" is better if you're more closely tied to the action being done, such as you're doing the action yourself.

If you're speaking generally like this, "that" would fit better because you're more detacted from the action.

For example:
"The pool feels amazing. You should come try this!"

"I bet swimming in that pool would feel great. You should go try that."

So it seems that the speaker of your first example is in the pool. The second speaker can be in home, hotel, etc. Right?😳🤓

Yes the first example would be in the pool. The second example I meant for it to be near the pool but at home works too.

Here's a better example though:

(Person talking about the future):
"Its going to take so long to walk there! I don't want to waste my time doing that!"

(Person currently walking):
"This is taking so long! Why am I wasting my time doing this."

The future is far away so we use "that" (just like how you use "that" for nouns that are far away)

The present is close so we use "this" (just like how we use "this" for nouns that are close)
