Frage über Englisch (US)
Does this sound natural as a normal speaking?
I prefer to watch the news occasionally because I don’t have much time to sit around watching it. You see, I’m a college student majoring in two degrees, so in my everyday life I’m busy taking all kinds of classes, writing papers, preparing presentations, etc., so I’m in no mood for newspapers or something.
Also, reading news can be distracting. For example, when doing it on my phone, I often get distracted by TV series, makeup tutorials, and funny videos. Spending time on these things will hurt my academic performance.
That’s why I don’t like to follow news regularly.
Thank you!✨✨

Sounds natural! Instead of using “something” you should use “anything”

I prefer to only watch the news occasionally because I don’t have much time to do it more often. I’m a college student double majoring in [major 1] and [major 2]. In my everyday life, I’m busy taking all kinds of classes, writing papers, preparing presentations, etc., so I’m normally in no mood to read newspapers or anything else.
Also, reading news is very boring. For example, when doing it on my phone, I often get distracted and end up just watching tv shows, makeup tutorials, or funny videos instead. And if I spend too much time on these things, it will hurt my academic performance.
That’s why I don’t like to follow the news regularly.
I don’t think we say “majoring in two degrees”. “Double major” is much more common.
Also, the news is not distracting if you end up getting distracted FROM it and doing other things. The tv shows, makeup tutorials, and funny videos on your phone are distracting. That’s why I think “boring” is a better way to describe how you feel about the news because you wouldn’t be tempted to do other things if you were interested in reading it.

@tacofromtacobell Appreciate it!😊😊
May I ask why? 😳I saw "or something" in Collins Dictionary. It seems "or something" means what I want.😳😂

@VictoriaY “anything” refers to more than one thing, as you meant it in this context
Example: “im not in the mood for coffee, tv or video games”
Instead of listing everything you are not in the mood for you can just say “anything” which is similar to “nothing”
Friend:”what do you want to eat?
Me:”im not in the mood for anything/nothing right now”

@bsloan7 Thank you so much!!☺️☺️
Can I ask how about "I'm a double major"?😂😂
Is the word "TV series" not common?😳😳
Is this⬇️ unnatural?😳😳
- Spending time on these things will hurt my academic performance.

@tacofromtacobell Thanks a lot for your explanation and examples!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
May I ask does "I'm in no mood for newspapers or something" make sense? 😳😳I feel "anything" is a little different from what I meant to say.🤣🤣🤣

@VictoriaY Yes, “I’m a double major” is natural! “Tv series” is also natural, but I think “tv shows” is more common.
Your last sentence is fine the way it is, but there is a difference between “spending time” and “spending too much time”. “Spending time on these things will hurt my academic performance” implies that you think you shouldn’t do them at all. (Any time you watch tv shows, makeup tutorials, etc. it hurts your academic performance). “Spending *too much time* on these things” indicates that you know you should do them in moderation. So you can do the things you enjoy, but if you spend more time on them than you should, it will hurt your academic performance.
