Frage über Schwedisch

Hi, i want to ask about four words and their pronunciation: Uddevalla, katter, sommar and radera. When I was listening to native speakers I noticed that “e” in “uddevalla”, “katter” “radera” and “a” in “sommar” sound like the short versions of these vowels, and as far as i know they should be pronounced long, because there is only one consonant following them. Are these exceptions or am I just making it up?

Well, the e in “radera” is long (although the a is short), but for the rest your observations are absolutely correct. There are in fact plenty of exceptions to this spelling rule, to the point that I’m hesitant to call it a rule! It’s more of a guiding principle that can’t really be relied upon

Even the exceptions have patterns. I haven't learned them but I think you could explain them something like this:

1. I'm pretty sure that words generally don't have two long vowels in a row.
2. -r at the end of words is always(?) short (bullar, kakor, springer, lager)
3. "radera" was borrowed from Latin so the spelling follows that (unlike later French loanwords! of which there are plenty)
