I have a friend who is soon going to military service, at the moment we're using kakaotalk to talk.
Is there a way to communicate during duty?
Can we just continue to use kakaotalk?
Do we need to talk over sth diffrent like Facebook?
Can I maybe send letters to him or will the contact be completely cut off?

They are allowed to use computers so Facebook is a good way to contact people.
If you live in Korea and have a Korean phone number he can also call you sometimes. And you might not be able to reach him but if necessary you can call and ask for him as well.
Letters can also be sent, just ask for his station and so on so it will be sent to the right place~

He will also have breaks every now and then, sometimes for over a week, sometimes just a day. During this time he can use his regular phone!

Yes, from what I remember a friend of my boyfriend gets letters from his girlfriend living in Ukraine

You can send mail via the internet while he is at the boot camp. They gonna print and give out to the trainees. (The internet isn't allowed during boot camp.)

After he is out of the boot camp and got assigned to some base, you can communicate with him via internet SNS such as facebook. Or You can send him mails or he can call you if you are in Korea.

Just to add, the internet mail during the camp training period(usually around 5~6 weeks) requires the sender to have a korean 공인인증서 or i-pin which I believe you cant get without having korean nationality or residence permit. During this period you cant access any computer either, and I'm pretty sure you won't be able to call outside of Korea. After you're assigned to a post though, it won't be a problem to use internet and talk on facebook.

@razmataz Good point. I forget about that, sorry. You can maybe ask his family or Korean friend to give him your letter instead during the boot camp period.
