I understand that the place where you gas ur car up is called a gas station but instead the thing you use is called a gas pump. So my question is that can the latter be an overarching term that you use to represent the former? Like "I am driving by the gas pump to fill my car?" or something.

No, you can't. You have to say 'I am driving to the gas station..'

You would say 'I'm going to the gas station to fill my car/tank'
or 'I'm going to (go to the gas station to) get petrol'
