"They were of equal talent" means "They had equal talent." In my opinion, one shouldn't write "They were equal talent." When one can and when one can't use "[to be] of," or when one is better to use some other preposition (and where), is a bit tricky. For example, in my opinion one shouldn't say "they were equal height"; one should say "they were of equal height" or "they were equal in height." Ditto for "weight" -- and one can say "They were equal _in_ talent" (or weight or height). One can find some instances of the "were equal [noun]" pattern on the Internet, but if one uses a site:.edu restriction, or just in general, the relative number and quality of the texts returned favors using one of the structures with a preposition.
If the "to be of" pattern is difficult, one way to avoid it is to turn the noun into an adjective, and the adjective "equal" into an adverb: "They were equally talented" is fine, as is "they were equally heavy" or "equally tall."
