@CarringtonH En español “te quiero mucho” se usa para con amigos o amigas y es para demostrar cariño y “te amo” es más fuerte para demostrar amor y se usa con las parejas o familiares.

Te amo is an extremelly strong feeling. For example, it's something an old man would say to his wife after a very long marriage, or something you'll say to your wife/husband during deeply romantic sex. It is also a poetic word, so you'll see it in songs and poems, even in shows set in the medieval eras :o
But nowadays the verb querer means to want and to love, and it is the one used for saying I love you in everyday life. If you say "te amo" to a person it can sound kind of awkward 😕 So always use "te quiero" to avoid that

In this context you can translate "te quiero mucho" as "I love you so much".

Don't pay attention to Moma1998's answer. That's not true. Or at least not in Spain...
The correct answer is Xlena's answer. "Querer" means both "to want" and "to love". And "amar" means "to love so so so so so so so much". So basically, we use "querer" like the 99% of the times. And the few times we use "amar" (if we use it, because there are some people who even die without having said it), we just use it with our partner, never with our family or friends (maybe you see some people saying it to their friends but it's as a joke).
So my recommendation would be as well that you always use "te quiero", you will never sound weird.

Omg ok thank y’all so much for telling me because I’ve been saying te amo to my friends but I didn’t know it was like that strong of a saying but they don’t speak Spanish so they wouldn’t know but thanks for telling me anyway though.

@CarringtonH You're welcome. And do not be afraid, because everybody in the USA and the UK thinks that we, Spanish and Latinos, always say "te amo"...
