I may stay at my friend's house (same as above)

Re: past:
The past tense is where it gets complicated.
These words "might, may, and must" all correlate to the conditional tense SOMETIMES (except for "might" which is ALWAYS conditional). If these verbs occur without the verb "be", then "May" gives permission and "must" is like a command or your own feeling. But in the past tense form they occur ONLY as conditional past with "have" or "have been". This means it is not certain that the statements are true. They are guesses and are open to being false or wrong.
Present tense , conditional (only with "be":
He might stay at my friend's house.
He may be staying at my friend's house.
He must be staying at my friend's house.
Past conditional:
He might have stayed at my friend's house.
He may have stayed at my friend's house.
He must have stayed at my friend's house.
All of these are saying that the "staying" started already and may not have ended yet. "Must" means the speaker is very certain. You can also use another structure might/may/must + have + been VERB-ing such as
He must have been staying at my friend's house. (There is a chance and the speaker very certain. The action is habitual and has started but does not say if it has stopped)
