Writing letter to friends = informal
Writing letter to teacher = formal (usually)
writing report - formal
talking with someone = could be both, depending on how important they are or how close of a friend you are to them
doing presentation = formal (usually)

@7070_nyanko Ahh, yes, there are many!
Nowadays, the formal and informal is kind of hard to distinguish what is correct to say or not -- but if you're worried about being rude in a formal scene, I'll help you.
These are some phrases that don't work as well in a formal scene:
- 'dude, just chill'
- 'like literally'
- 'omg, ikr' (or any abbreviations usually don't work well especially in a formal educational presentation, for example)
- 'babe'
- 'man'
- 'dude'
Now, don't feel too pressured about sounding too casual. Nowadays, I think talking in a casual way is accepted even in the formal situations you come across in. So in English, don't worry about if you sound too casual, because I think there isn't really anything you could say that makes a huge difference in formality other than word choice (ie, is your words professional for whatever you are talking about?)
Hope it helps. :)
