Good question. All I can tell you is what works for me:
Grammar is VERY important, since how you choose to express yourself determines what people think about you. Depending on what impression you want to make, sometimes you'd say things that are correct grammar and sometimes you'd say things that aren't considered correct. But they would still be natural.
Grammer is like looking in the rearview mirror, and much of what is considered "correct" today includes things that were incorrect but very common a generation ago.
To sound really natural, like others have already said, it's critical to imitate real native speech and writing as much as you possibly can.
Personally, I've never been able to get any real benefit out of studying grammar. I have received huge benefits from imitating native speakers.
For example, I take many of the HiNative answers by native speakers and put them in Anki (which is a SRS program) so I can practice them over and over and over... I do the same thing with things that native speakers post on Facebook, or Weibo or 百思不得姐 or whatever.
If you don't mind spending a little money, I've found materials from Glossika very helpful for imitating native speech. http://www.glossika.com/
In the end, this seems to help me learn natural language much better.

It depends on the person. I think that being understood is more important than having perfect grammar, but nobody wants to sound like a caveman when they speak either. I think that grammar is important, but I don't think that focusing so much on grammar is a good idea like many teachers do. I know people who have taken 4 years of Spanish in the US who are extremely good at grammar but can't even have a basic conversation. They think about the grammar so much that it interferes with the main goal: getting your message across to the other person.
I fixed up what you wrote :)

Native English speakers may not have learned about grammar, but they know how sentences should be structured by hearing others speak all day. If they make mistakes in speaking or writing, their parents, teachers, and sometimes friends would correct them. In this way the literate/educated people don't make many mistakes, and those who make basic grammatical mistakes are frowned upon. However, there are some widely accepted, or at least tolerated grammatical mistakes in spoken English, simply because most people use it wrong. 😄
As a non-native speaker, you may not have the luxury of listening to native speakers talk all the time and having someone correcting you constantly. Therefore, learning the correct grammar is important. I'm sure you are not thinking about grammar when you speak Chinese. However, if a foreigner speaks Chinese with terrible grammar, s/he may sound cute initially, but s/he won't be able to get too far in schools or any professional field.
